Top Retail Companies To Buy Right Now

The big question in the retail sector is whether any company can hold on against Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN). Corner bookstores have all but disappeared, Borders is history and Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) is teetering on the edge of doom.

What may be a more interesting question is whether Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE: BBY), which appears to be in something of a turnaround, will be able to beat back Amazon. Best Buy quarterly results reported this morning were better than expected, and that pushed the stock to a new 52-week high.

The company online revenue grew 10.5% year-over-year to $477 million domestically, representing just over 5% of Best Buy total quarterly revenue. Growth in online sales actually is down from 14.2% growth in the second quarter a year ago. Total revenues were also lower and same-store sales were much lower. That is not a turnaround, or at least not a turnaround in the right direction.

Without a gigantic increase in its online revenue, can Best Buy survive? With Amazon willing to post net losses as it expands its offerings and its customer base by selling at razor-thin margins, there is really no way that Best Buy can compete on price. And while other things like customer service do matter, these drain profits in the short to medium term, and that is all the time that Best Buy has.

Earlier this morning, TheBuckle (NYSE: BKE  ) , Costco (NASDAQ: COST  ) , and L Brands (NYSE: LTD  ) reported May sales, and everyone did better. That's not to say that the market loved the results, but investors may be breathing a sigh of relief nevertheless. The range for the three retailers was fairly tight, but there are still some ups and downs for investors to keep in mind.

Not only is management wisely targeting the Internet as a growth node, but it is putting the pedal down on a new outlet division. Similar to its former parent L Brands (NYSE: LTD  ) , Express looks to take advantage of the ongoing expansion of outlet malls and their value proposition to customers. Real estate trusts such as Simon Property Group have used outlet malls as a primary source of expansion in recent years, driven by customers' desire to own luxury brands at discount prices.

Seeing Wal-Mart (WMT) has a P/E of 13 and Costco (COST) has a P/E of 26 and then setting off to prove that Wal-Mart prospects are every bit as good as Costco is a terrible idea. If you want to buy Wal-Mart stock you need only prove that Wal-Mart is selling for less than the business is worth. You don need to know why Wal-Mart sells for less than Costco or Dollar General (DG). In fact, you don even need to know how high or low Wal-Mart P/E is compared to those businesses. You only need to know one price and understand the value of one business.

Discount retailer Dollar General (NYSE: DG  ) rebounded 3.2% after having a miserable Tuesday, which saw the company lower the top end of its full-year EPS forecast from a range of $3.15-$3.30 to a range of $3.15-$3.22 on revenue growth of 10%-11% (from a previous forecast of 10%-12%). It might seem counterintuitive to think that Dollar General, a store that specializes in deep discounts, would have any sort of trouble attracting customers in this environment, but delayed tax refunds and higher payroll taxes are putting off the discretionary higher-margin purchases that even dollar stores like Dollar General count on to drive margin growth. This is the same problem retail chain Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) encountered in its most recent quarter, where same-store sales fell 1.4%. Consumers want a good deal, but they simply don't have the cash to purchase discretionary items. That could be a recipe for volatile results for both Dollar General and Wal-Mart over the next couple of quarters.

It is not necessary that all dollar stores or similar small box retailers will survive in an environment where consumers are largely cost conscious. Some would fare well while others might sink. Typical examples of such companies are Dollar General (DG) and Family Dollar Stores (FDO). Dollar General has been great soldier whereas Family Dollar continues to flop.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, outside the Dow, Dollar General (NYSE: DG  ) plunged 9% after a poor earnings report. Citing the payroll tax increase and weaker margins due to greater markdowns and a lower-margin mix of products, the deep-discount retailer narrowed its earnings and revenue guidance to the lower half of its previously projected range. If the Fed's moves put further pressure on consumers, then Dollar General could keep seeing pressure even as it expands ambitiously to add to its store count nationwide.

Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.

Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.

But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):

[Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC comps were stronger than[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.

Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.

Vitamin Shoppe Inc (NYSE: VSI), Books-A-Million, Inc (NASDAQ: BAMM) and Perfumania Holdings, Inc (NASDAQ: PERF) have the dubious distinction of beingthe worst performing small capspecialty retail stocks for this year (according to Finviz.com) with losses of 4.85% and3% and a gain of 0.61%, respectively, since the start of the year (See my previous article: This Year Best Performing Small Cap Specialty Retail Stocks? I should mention that the definition of specialty retail stocks might vary from one stock screener to another, but what clear is that these three small cap retail stocks have been heading in the wrong direction for investors for much of this year. With that in mind, what sort of performance should investors expect from these small cap specialty retail stocks on Black Friday and for the all important holiday season? Yum! Brands (YUM) Inc., the owner of the KFC and Pizza Hut chains, counts on China for half its sales. The Louisville, Kentucky-based company slid 3 percent last week and posted a 13 percent decline in July same-store sales from China as diners remained reluctant to eat chicken amid an outbreak of avian flu.
