Top 5 Asian Companies To Watch For 2014

While the news that Gap (NYSE: GPS  ) is planning on taking its Old Navy brand to China wasn't surprising, investors might not have foreseen the strength the company has in its convictions. On a call with investors yesterday, Gap's management said, "We see [the opportunity for global growth] particularly in some countries where in our category, you're talking about double-digit growth just to keep up with the market." That means China, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Cambodia, just to name a few.

The start of the push will come from franchise Old Navy locations in China, but with Gap's impressive array of brands, it's not going to be long before others come along.

The new opportunity
Gap is looking at Old Navy to be the first big push into new Asian markets. At first, stores will be franchise locations, with up to 85 open before the end of the year, with 10 of those being outlets. One of the biggest strengths that the company boasts is its impressive underlying operations. On yesterday's call, the company bragged that the structure now in place was buried in the P&L from 2008 to 2012, and now the cost to enter new locations is minimal.

Daniel Acker/Bloomberg/Getty Images Maybe it's not too late for McDonald's (MCD) to start serving chili cheese dogs and cherry limeades directly to cars by food runners on roller skates. Sonic (SONC) posted quarterly results after Monday's market close, proving once again that the "America's Drive-In" is holding up a lot better than McDonald's. The secret to Sonic's success can't be the expanding menu of cheap eats because that's a strategy that's not working for McDonald's. Is it the retro charm that's fueling growth at the chain of 3,500 fast food restaurants? Is it the unique menu? Is it the memory-making dine-in experience that's rare to find elsewhere these days? Whatever it is, it's working for Sonic. Sonic Boom Sonic had another blowout quarter, fueled by a same-store sales spike of 5.3 percent for the three months ending in May. Just to frame this achievement in perspective, McDonald's has posted negative same-store sales for three consecutive quarters at its domestic locations. The two burger chains operate on different fiscal calendars, but for an apples-to-apples comparison, consider that McDonald's stateside comps during March, April and May would have been collectively negative. Sales growth is just part of a strong quarter. Investors need to make sure that a company isn't padding sales by selling expensive food on the cheap. Sales growth has to bleed down to the bottom line, and Sonic's operating profit and earnings climbed 6 percent and 13 percent, respectively. Just so we're clear on the cheerleading, McDonald's posted declines on both fronts in its latest quarter. Sonic posted better than expected results on Monday. McDonald's fell short of Wall Street profit targets in its most recent report. Dine and Dash On the surface, it would seem that McDonald's is trying to be more like Sonic. A wide array of drink choices has been a hallmark of the Sonic experience, and that's been happening at McDonald's since the McCafe introduced smoothies a

Starbucks (SBUX), Chipotle (CMG), Sonic (SONC), Disney (DIS) theme parks and Chili's, which is owned by Brinker International (EAT), have recently asked their customers to come unarmed.

However, there are a few restaurants who have managed to brave the headwinds and have come out as winners. Some of these are Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), Sonic (SONC), and Domino's Pizza (DPZ) -- which have bucked the industry trend.

Security services provider Proofpoint Inc.(PFPT) shares popped after the company posted better-than-expected fourth-quarter results and issued optimistic revenue guidance. Shares jumped 10% to $40.24 premarket.

  • [By Sean Williams]

One company in particular I'd suggest putting back on the sales rack is Proofpoint (NASDAQ: PFPT  ) , a threat and regulatory security-as-a-service provider. The profit potential is certainly there. Proofpoint's SaaS model is built around getting the client hooked on its products and making it inconvenient and cost-inefficient for them to switch to a competitor. In other words, it's setting up its own razor-and-blades model that should fuel recurring revenue for years to come.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB) is nowhere near as large of a stake as Wells Fargo, but Warren Buffett keeps growing this stake as well. Its higher-end customer has to be attractive to Buffett. The stake grew to 79.11 million shares, versus a prior stake of 78.277 million shares. It had also been raised from 61.458 million shares prior to that. This stock was not reacting positively and was actually down $0.10 at $38.18 in mid-Friday trading. Still, its shares did briefly hit a new high of $38.39 on Friday. The consensus price target was $39.97 on last look, and new investors are getting a 2.4% yield here, even at these high prices.

The nation's second-biggest bank, along with U.S. Bank -- a subsidiary of huge Midwest regional U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB  ) -- has earned the Freedom Award from the U.S. Department of Defense -- an honor earned by showing outstanding support of employees who are also members of our armed forces.
